Together with Museum Prinsenhof, we created an app which allows you to explore Vermeer's Delft on a walk through the city.

Next Friday, the ‘Vermeer Comes Home’ exhibition will open in the Museum Prinsenhof. It is a very special moment: one of the Rijksmuseum's star works, Vermeer's ‘The Little Street’, is being brought to Delft specially for this exhibition. In order to ensure that visitors to the exhibition can experience Delft as Vermeer knew it, we created the ‘Where is Vermeer?’ walking app in collaboration with the Prinsenhof.

De app Opnames met Ariaantje

Ariaantje app

The app introduces you to Ariaentgen Claes van der Minne, also known as Ariaantje. Ariaantje is Vermeer's aunt and lives in the house which can be seen in his painting ‘The Little Street’. Together with Ariaantje, you can go on a walk through the Delft of 1665 in search of her nephew Johannes. During the walk, information points and brief film clips will tell you more about Delft as Ariaantje and Vermeer knew it.

Walkers navigate via GPS, not using Google Maps but rather an old city map of Delft known as the 'Kaert Figuratief' (Figurative Map). As modern-day Delft is not so very different from the Delft of that period, we were able to superimpose the old map on Google Maps precisely without too much editing. For people who are not yet that digitally advanced, we also produced a booklet which shows the route in four languages.
