PICASSO: Beauty and Drama

MCW created animated videos that bring the raw emotion and burning passion behind each artwork to the surface, revealing Picasso’s inspirations and beliefs. He enjoyed collaborating with printmakers in studios, often producing an entire series of prints using various graphic printing techniques. We documented these methods as they were practised at the time, in detailed films that uncover the secrets of Picasso’s printmaking.

To transport visitors back to Picasso’s Málaga of 1881, we composed an immersive multichannel soundscape that fills the entire venue. Through a network of 21 precisely positioned speakers, the sights and sounds of 19th-century Málaga come vividly to life. The narrow streets hum with the chatter of cafés and the melodies of street musicians; processions wind solemnly through the city; cicadas buzz in the olive groves; and the roar of the crowd rises from the bullring, together creating a powerful illusion of time and place.

Extensive research was conducted to collect and recreate the sounds of early Málaga, ensuring the soundscape authentically reflected the period. While the foundation of the soundscape was developed in our studio in the Netherlands, the final production and mixing were carried out entirely on location, a process we follow consistently if possible. To craft the best possible experience for our clients, we first immerse ourselves in it: Do we feel engaged? Do the streets feel alive? Do the sounds flow naturally and sit well within the physical space? When, in the end, the natural quiet felt strangely empty compared to our meticulously layered sonic world, we knew we had truly brought old Málaga back to life.
