Power – 800 Years of the Binnenhof

The Binnenhof in The Hague has been the stage of power struggles for over eight hundred years. In this symbolic place, power has taken many forms over the centuries, with changing players, winners and losers, noble and brutal sides, ultimately leading to the democracy we know today.

The story of Dutch politics is told and brought to life through four key themes: building for power, battling for power, clinging to power and displaying power. These themes are narrated by characters from the future who, at times with a sense of wonder, look back at the past, and reflect on the present.

Through various interactive installations, visitors can explore how power has taken shape in the Netherlands over the past 800 years. For example, the interactive "Distribution in the House of Representatives" uses five categories to provide a clear picture of who has been vying for power since 1815. Visitors are invited to form their own opinion: has power in the Netherlands truly been distributed fairly... and is it now?
